Marcus Karger, 50, was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of JAO (Joint Allocation Office) with effect from 2025. Until then, he will assume the role of First Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board, as stipulated in JAO’s Articles of Association. The Luxembourg-based company is the European single point of contact for the trading of cross-border capacity products in the electricity sector. “I am delighted to be taking on this important role. As an auction platform for cross-border transmission capacity rights, JAO plays a vital role in cross-border electricity trading. Every market participant wanting to trade electricity across borders must secure some of these scarce capacities. In my new role, I can be more active in shaping the auction rules. JAO is also involved in all major ENTSOE projects.”
Marcus Karger has held a management position at Austrian Power Grid AG for 13 years. "The appointment of Marcus Karger to the position of Deputy Chairman and, from 2025, as Chairman of the Supervisory Board is an acknowledgment of his expertise and a sign of APG's long-standing and comprehensive commitment to playing a part in international issues. For APG, this commitment on a European level is not just empty words, but an essential cornerstone, in terms of ensuring the security of electricity supply on the continent and setting the strategic course for the energy industry," says Thomas Karall, Chief Financial Officer of APG.
Karger's active involvement in JAO goes back more than a decade. JAO has a total of 95 employees, the company carries out 20,000 auctions per year and is responsible for the auctioning of cross-border capacities for a total of 50 European TSOs (Transmission System Operators). The current turnover amounts to 10 billion euros.
The revenue generated by JAO through the sale of cross-border capacities affecting the Austrian borders can be reinvested by APG in expanding cross-border transmission lines.
