Future Grid Tracker

Key electricity projects for the energy transition between 2016 and 2034

APG is responsible for managing the electricity system of the future. This requires an expanded, high-capacity, digitalized, and resilient electricity infrastructure. With the ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement in December 2015 and the subsequently defined binding targets at national and European levels, it was clear that all new grid infrastructure projects that were in the planning stages or already being implemented from this point onwards would serve to facilitate the energy transition. Thus they are considered energy transition projects regardless of whether they are reinforcement and expansion measures, new line and substation projects, or focus on developing innovative digitalization and technology solutions. APG’s Future Grid Tracker presents all these projects and visualizes their progress.

Note: The Future Grid Tracker not only maps line conversion and expansion projects but also includes innovation, flexibilization, and system development projects. Exemplary projects represented in the Future Grid Tracker in addition to large-scale line projects also comprise cross-sector projects such as ‘zusammEn2040’.

All construction projects were and are part of APG’s investment scheme and are therefore also included in our Grid Development Plans which are published and approved at regular intervals. Similarly, they are subject to the annual review by E-Control, Austria’s regulatory authority in the energy sector. Of course, the Future Grid Tracker also displays all projects included in the 2023 Grid Development Plan.

However, due to continuously changing circumstances, new projects are constantly being added and, if necessary, schedules of existing projects are adjusted according to the most up-to-date planning status (e.g. the Grid Development Plan 2025 will be available in autumn 2025 and include new projects as well as an update of the schedules of the projects in the Grid Development Plan 2023). This may result in a seemingly lower percentage regarding the projects’ implementation status, even though their implementation progress is according to schedule.
